Located in downtown Victoria, Sussex Place is comprised of an eleven storey high quality office building and a two level commercial and retail courtyard contained within the framework of an existing Art Deco inspired heritage building, the Sussex Hotel. The design was developed to respect and augment the historic 1930’s facade of the Sussex Hotel, a controversial requirement by the City of Victoria. The existing building is re-adapted to contain ground floor shops fronting both Douglas and Broughton Streets. A cobblestone courtyard serves as a public pre-court to the main entry portal of the office tower.

The practice worked in close collaboration with the client, public, and Victoria’s City Council to achieve the rezoning. The process proved rewarding to all parties involved and has resulted in what has been described as a benchmark for creative and appropriate design in downtown Victoria.
