Darryl joined Merrick Architecture in 2006 as an Intern Architect and became an Managing Associate in 2010 at our Victoria studio. He is particularly disciplined in his attentiveness to constructability while imbuing a strong sense of craft. He is thoughtful and articulate, translating client dreams into poetic solutions. In addition to his hands-on experience and technical knowledge, Darryl offers exceptional design strengths that are invaluable during the conceptual phase of planning and design. Some of his most significant accomplishments include the Klahoose Multi-Centre on Cortes Island, the Heritage Janion Building in Victoria, and the St. Michaels University School Junior School Annex in Oak Bay.

Graham first joined the practice in 1989 following a decade of multi-disciplinary experience in Calgary. Rejoining the practice in 2004 after a 4 year recess, Graham has since provided a design and practice management role, leading a diverse range of commissions within the housing, institutional, commercial office, recreation, transportation and interior design sectors. A UCLA medal recipient, Graham offers passionate and accomplished commitment as a designer, in combination with proven project team managerial skills, while appreciating the pragmatic issues embodied within the creation of excellent architecture. Born in Victoria, Graham’s travels and previous residencies in other cities have inspired a global perspective in his quest for quality holistic solutions that blend program, context and creativity.

Gregory Borowski’s architectural perspective is rooted in his particular life experience. As the son of an architect in Britain, he saw many of Europe’s greatest cities and contemporary buildings as a child. Building on these early impressions, he embraced the Canadian environment in his RAIC Medal-winning thesis project at the UBC School of Architecture. In addition to design leadership on a range of major commissions in Vancouver, including Vancouver’s Olympic Village, Gregory spent two years in France working on the Charles de Gaulle Airport Satellite project, prior to rejoining Merrick Architecture in 2001. Gregory has chaired the Vancouver and UBC Urban Design Panels, and believes strongly in the contribution buildings can make to the broader qualities of neighbourhoods and cities. Louise Webb joined Merrick Architecture in May 2008 to enhance the substantial team effort required for Millennium Water Vancouver’s Olympic Village. She brought with her a proven track record of working on fast track and high density housing projects both in the US and British Columbia. Louise relocated from her native England in 2000, where she worked in many different fields including social housing, health care, refurbishment of large post war housing projects and laboratories. Louise’s consistent approach both in the office and in the field, combined with her superlative and highly personable communication skills make her a flexible asset to any project team. The application of her remarkable cross-section of abilities was instrumental to the success of the Transportation Management Centre for the Ministry of Transportation & Infrastructure.

Mitch Sakumoto joined the practice in 1998 to help complete the Vancouver Island Cancer Centre. A strong team manager, he since has led the successful realization of various complex projects, including the Segal Centre for SFU in Vancouver, and managed many master-planning and large-scale multi-sector initiatives. Mitch’s expertise in institutional health care and award-winning heritage/adaptive reuse projects, enhanced by his capable management style, proved essential to the single-contract renovation of 13 heritage buildings for BC Housing’s P3 SRO Renewal Initiative. As a registered member of the Canadian Association of Heritage Professionals, and offering a balance of technical and design training (BCIT/ University of Idaho ), Mitch delivers architectural excellence through expert documentation.

An original co-founder of the practice now Merrick Architecture - Borowski Sakumoto Fligg McIntyre Ltd., a fellow of the RAIC, and a recent recipient of the AIBC Lifetime Achievement Award, Paul conceived and directed much of the award-winning work of the Practice beginning in 1984. He remains a respected mentor for all of the practice’s staff, and, beyond the retirement of his ownership in 2010, continues to provide a valued contribution to the ongoing work of both studios as a Senior Design Consultant. Paul offers a widely-acknowledged reputation as a gifted and collaborative architect and urban designer, established early in his career, as Practice Chair of the acclaimed Vancouver firm Thompson Berwick and Pratt, which during the 1970s led to work across Canada and internationally.

Shaun became a Principal in 2014, following his key role since 2010 as Managing Associate of the Victoria Studio, and his contribution in both studios since first joining the practice in 1999. A former teacher, with technical (NAIT) and architectural (UBC) training, Shaun is an engaging administrator and accomplished designer, especially skilled in digital rendering techniques. His balanced approach has proven valuable on various complex rezoning intitiatives, across multiple sectors, and in every project phase. Notable examples that have benefitted from his strong leadership include the Royal BC Museum Master Plan, St. Michaels University School’s Sun Student Centre, the Hudson Mews, and multiple heritage rehabilitation projects. Shaun is a past member of the City of Victoria’s Advisory Design Panel.
